ChatGPT has added a new feature that allows users to identify songs playing nearby using Shazam’s audio recognition technology. The integration brings music identification capabilities directly into the chatbot interface.
Users can now type prompts that include the word Shazam, such as asking what song is currently playing. The system then activates Shazam’s audio fingerprinting technology to match the sound against its music database.
Once a song is identified, the chat interface displays the track title, artist name, and related information. Users also have the option to preview the song directly within the conversation.
Users need to manually enable the feature by going into ChatGPT settings, accessing the Apps section, and searching for Shazam.
After installation, the feature can be activated by starting any request with Shazam. The functionality works across iOS, Android, and web platforms. It does not require users to have the Shazam app installed separately, though those who do can save identified songs to their Shazam library.
For users who connect both Shazam and Apple Music to their ChatGPT account, the integration creates a direct path from song discovery to playback. After identifying a track, users can ask ChatGPT to generate playlists based on that song using either Apple Music or Spotify.
The collaboration marks Apple’s second major integration with OpenAI, following the Apple Music app for ChatGPT launched in December 2025. For Apple, the partnership extends Shazam’s reach to ChatGPT’s user base, including those who do not own Apple devices.
For OpenAI, the addition gives the chatbot the ability to interact with the user’s environment through audio recognition, expanding its capabilities beyond text based conversations.
The feature began rolling out globally on March 9, 2026, across iOS, Android, and web platforms.
