Spotify Introduces About the Song, a New Way to Explore the Stories Behind the Music

Spotify has launched a new feature called About the Song, which is designed to provide listeners with background information and stories about the tracks they are playing. The feature is currently in a beta testing phase.

The tool places short, swipeable story cards directly into the Now Playing View within the Spotify mobile app. These cards summarize information from third party sources to surface details about a song’s inspiration, meaning, and behind the scenes context.

Spotify stated the goal is to deepen listeners’ connections to music by offering immediate access to this contextual information.

Simultaneously, Spotify has rolled out Page Match for its audiobook catalog. This feature allows users to scan a page from a physical book or e-reader using their smartphone camera within the Spotify app.

About the Song is initially rolling out to Premium subscribers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia. The beta version is available on iOS and Android devices and is presented in English.

To access the feature, users can open the Now Playing View while listening in the mobile app and scroll down to find the About the Song card on supported tracks. Spotify is inviting both artists and listeners to submit feedback directly through the card to help refine the experience.

  1. While listening in the Spotify mobile app, open the Now Playing View.
  2. Scroll down to find the About the Song card on supported tracks.
  3. Swipe through to explore the stories behind the track. We’re always looking for ways to improve, and both artists and listeners can share feedback directly via the card to help shape the experience.
